I have several down lights in the loft which are currently underneath T&G floorboards. I was wondering if I can lay insulation directly over the floorboards. There is currently no insulation under the floorboards in the areas where there are down lights. However this means there is no insulation in a large part of the loft and I'd like to lay some 200mm insulate over the whole area. An option I was thinking of is lifting up the floorboards and fitting downlight protectors, but is this worth it? Are the floorboards offering enough protection already? Any suggestions welcome.

Do you mean because of heat?

If so and you are using energy efficient bulbs or LEDs I am no expert but I cannot see a few watts being much or a problem, the old type bulbs maybe a nother kettle of fish.
