Downstairs lighting no longer working

If both kitchen lights are controlled by one switch ,there is likely a junction box ,probably in the ceiling void.

Yes it's PROBABLE ,that the hall is the first on the loop.

Thanks @terryplumb. That confirms what I suspected.
Is the hidden junction box a normal occurrence? I am wondering how I would have diagnosed or corrected the loose terminal issue if it was at this junction? Presumably, I would need to cut out the ceiling or lift the floorboards but also, how would I know if I should rip open the area above kitchen light #1 or #2?

Junction boxes in hidden areas are very common. These days they have to be maintenance free ,so no screw terminals to come loose , and strain relief to prevent cables being pulled out. Very often a floorboards up job to find them !!
