Any system is only as strong as your password.......
Not any system. If the system is badly designed, it may be possible to circumnavigate the password protection altogether, no matter how strong the password!

Kind Regatds, John.

You can circumnavigate most systems but not through wireless connection. But most routers, like phone mail, is protected with a default password. Not many people change them....

The most recent router I bought was supplied with a unique password already installed.

Not really true in general. The security of a system depends crucially on both how strong the password is and how many attempts at the password the attacker can reasonablly make.

Consider a random 8 digit numeric password, that gives a hundred million combinations. Consider it is typed into a security system that locks out after 10 attempts. The chance of the intruder getting in before the system locks out is 1 in 10 million. Most would call that probability negligible

Now consider a random 8 digit numeric password is used as an unlock code for a purely software based encryption system to protect a laptops hard drive. Since the attacker can just make a copy of the drive the only think limiting the number of attempts is the ammount of computing resources at thier disposal. As such it is almost certain that they will succeed in cracking it.

Personally I think that interception of packet data is the easy way around routers but not the sort of think average jo can do.

Router security is pants.

some info is out of date but it gives you an idea how things work.

"That wouldn't be as much of a problem for security if wireless access points locked out devices after repeated bad PIN entries. But on many WPS wireless routers, there is no lockout feature. That means attackers can continue to attempt to connect at their leisure."

"The routers most vulnerable to these attacks—the ones without PIN lockout features—include products from Cisco's Linksys division, Belkin, Buffalo, Netgear, TP-Link, ZyXEL, and Technicolor. None of the vendors has issued a statement on the vulnerability, or replied to inquiries from Veihbock."

How old is your router people?

My Man tells me the brand new models are coming thru with this "flawed" system. picking it is easy peasy to those with the know how the one slight measure being an auto lock out after say 10 unsuccessful attempts as a little slow me down

The key words here are wireless and handshake.
