Protrudes less into the outer leaf?

There is usually no need for any lintel support (outer leaf) over window openings etc regarding openings that have the masonry terminating at the top of the window, i.e. the soffit and widow head are at the same level.

We actually trap a piece of timber down onto the masonry using cradling fixed to the rafter ends. This is ideal support the soffit ply and (plastic) hollow soffit board.

If however it is your intention to show any amount of masonry above the window or if it is a gable end, then a regular cavity lintel will be needed.
