Hi

Is there a way of detecting where a fault may be with the cable .So you can simply remove the tile and fix the cable?

Thanks Tony

There are specialist companies out there that can do this, but they are not cheap.
A builder I know who did a bathroom as part of an extension (subs out all other trades - I was not involved with this job) had one go pear shaped.. I think it's going to cost them more than £400 to get it sorted.. There's going to be a few words when they find out who's fault it is!

The job I've just done for him involved a heating mat.. I think I must have tested it about 6 times in all (every time OK:D)

If you know accurately the route the cables taking you could possiblly find the position of the fault with a time domain reflectometer but those things aren't cheap.

Thanks for the replies

The floor only gets hot on one side ?

Ive been told that if there is a break in the cable the side going back to the fused outlet will still work .

I thought of trying to use a simply elctric cable detector ?But as the cable are so close together this may give a false reading

Thanks Tony

That won't work for a couple of reasons..

1. the UFH cable is earth sheathed
2. the UFH cable has L&N together, the magnetic fields will cancel eachother out
3. if it's under tiles, a lot of tiles use metal oxides to create the colours[/b]

Infra-Red camera is the way to go I'd say.

As for repairs, it depends on the manufacturer, I only fit Raychem, so if it is there system I can get in touch with them to find out about jointing if you need...
