Hello,

Just moved to a new house with oil fired central heating. Got a shocking electricity bill for the 1st month of living here, so got a gadget that shows electricity usage to find the culprit.

When the (oil burning) central heating starts burning, the gadget is showing 200-300W jump in electricity usage. Was a bit surprised by this  .

What is normal electricity usage associated with oil fired central heating?

What you notice is perfectly normal....when the burner starts up, there is that initial peak in consumption as the burner motor gets up to speed, and there is also the spark ignition to consider, together with the minor consumption of the oil solenoid coil etc.
However, once the thing is running, the usage falls to just the burner motor, (100W max), the pump coil plus the water circulating pump, together with the tiny amount of electricity consumed by the programmer etc.
John :)
