Guys I am after an opportunity. Its a long shot but rarer things have happened. Im hoping this post will be allowed given my long standing contribution to this forum.
All through school I wanted to be an electrician. It was my dream. I'm forever looking up at lighting, cables, tray etc and wish I could do stuff like that. In my adult life I've dabbled in bits of electrical work at home. Wired a shed, rewired a kitchen, swapped all the switch plates in my new house. I enjoy all this. I've even wired contactors. I have good knowledge of 3 phase, rcd and mcb types, a lot of the regs, safe zones, protection of cables, rcd rules, smoke alarms etc. I could probably wire a burglar alarm if I wanted to.
Unfortunately I followed my friends to sixth form, where I didn't get the grades I needed for the university course I wanted. I went into retail management.
I'm 33 now and have spent 15 years of my life in retail which no longer interests me. The main benefit I can bring from that is customer service skills. I have applied for various jobs based on this, but not been successful anywhere. The thought of another 35 years of work in retail horrifies me. I have a family to support at home as the main earner. I could get financial support from parents etc if necessary for a year but would prefer not to! I'm willing to put in the hours to succeed and work towards the relevant qualifications.
The one thing I cannot do is the traditional route into the industry, an apprenticeship. I simply cannot afford it - unless it was paid at at least the minimum wage. And any job offer must be secure and stable, until i am qualified at least, as id be leaving my current job. To make ends meet i need £400pw pre tax.
If you're in Barnsley Rotherham or Doncaster (I'm in Swinton S64) and can help or know someone who can help please let me know. I'm thinking a job as an electricians mate or something like that would suit my situation.
Advice welcome too.
Thanks.
