Hi all
.Im in process of having garage converted into a dining room.
Electric meter is staying in situ but want to make it easy to hide disguise. So im looking at various options . Can the meter be removed from its backing so to make it flatter against the wall. Also before plasterer starts what should be covered over the mains cables.

NO you cannot and must not move the backing board in any way. This can put strain on the supply cable with potential dangerous consequences.
Also the securung screws are inside the meter which is security sealed, it is illegal to break those seals and very dangerous.
Also the backing board is the property of the electricity company.
LEAVE IT ALONE

They'll be fine as they are

He may need to run some new cables and some of the existing ones may need to be upgraded to meet todays requirements. Also the new board will be a different size and shape to the old one.
My advice would be to have the consumer unit changed before you do the plastering.

thanks for the reply electrician has done 1st fix but wants to do consumer unit after with 2nd fix which may prove difficult in my opinion once the board is applied to the beams
