I am building a floor to ceiling cupboard the front of which will be flush to give the appearance of a wall. Some timber will be showing and will need to be knotted. I want to paint the cupboard with emulsion to match the walls. Can I emulsion over the knotting? or apply a water based primer then emulsion? or possibly use another finish in the same colour (this can be mixed at Dulux trade)

Emulsion paints are not really designed to be applied to timber and should never be applied to a bare timber surface, you can if you wish after applying your knotting solution apply a coat of primer undercoat, then when dry lightly sand and then repeat this one more time. This should offer a stable surface of which to apply your emulsion, yet is always a better option to select a paint system that is designed to be applied to a particular surface.

Many thanks for the info. Regarding alternative paint would eggshell finish be a reasonable match to vinyl silk emulsion?

Eggshells offer a very low sheen, if you bring the woodwork to undercoat level you will be ok to use your emulsion.
