escort tdi dodgy 2nd gear

hello new on here and not that mechanically minded so please bear with me. have just purchased an escort tdi and when i put it into second it makes a grinding noise like i havnt selected gear properly. strange as it doesn't happen when selecting any other gear. any advice would be welcome thanks.

Sounds like 2nd gear synchro cone's gone. If so it's gearbox overhaul or 2nd hand box from breakers yard.

When gears are engaged, a device called a "synchro mesh" brings both gears to a similar speed so that the gear change is smooth and quiet. If the fault lies with just one gear, it is likely that a synchro mesh cone is sticking or has become worn or damaged. It's an expensive fault to fix and, if you have only just bought the vehicle you should seek some redress from the seller. This fault, generally, appears after a high mileage and, sometimes, can be reduced by a change of gearbox oil. However, the real fix is a gearbox replacement or overhaul and, neither options are cheap.
