exposed ceiling timbers

I have a number of pine planks spanning a room in my house. The planks will be exposed and have a rough finish. I am thinking of darkening them to a light oak type of colour and am wondering what to use. The cost of interior stain is horrendous and I have a very large area of wood to stain.

Would it be possible to use a cheaper exterior woodstain?

I would be grateful for any suggestions

Use a thinner one..and thin it out so it acts like a dye
