External Hardwood Door Frame - Size Adjustment

I have a Howdens hardwood external door frame and door that need to be made 20mm narrower to fit the brick opening. I'm torn between simply taking 10 mm off the sides of the frame or carry out some carpentry on the joints and reduce the door and frame size by 20mm. This is more work, but does not weaken the door frame. It's at home so time and being retired, time is not an issue. The door frame is 65mm x 45mm, removing 10mm will reduce it to 35mm x 65mm (a 25% reduction of timber). The hinge screws I have are 30mm so will be fine.

I think a professional Wood Butcher would simply reduce the frame outside width. As I want a good job and are slightly wary of weakening the frame down to 35mm x 60mm. Any suggestions please as to whether the frame would be weakened too much.

a rebated 35 will be perhaps 25-29 at the door face??
also you ideally need 5-10mm each side wiggle room

If I remove the 10mm, I will still have 35mm frame depth at the door face and 45mm depth at the widest point. I think this will leave the frame strong enough.

are you sure
will normally be made from ex 3x2" timber[76x51mm] coming up as around 44x69mm after machining or in your instance where you will have a say 45mm x10 mm rebate for a 44mm thick door and around 20mm at the back behind the rebate making up 65mm you have
you need to rotate your brain through 90%

ok just to clarify
you will have 35mm but only for the door stop width off 20mm the other 45mm will only be 25mm
and 25mm screws will not give enough support for an external door
but as i said you need another 15-20mm off the size to give you wiggle room

I've got 35mm where the hinge screws (30mm) will go and over 45mm around the rest of it. As I've cut it now, It's job done. I will let you know if the door falls off.

what material is in the opening where the frame is going ??

It's a brick aperture in an out building.

if your frame is 35mm then you should get away with 1 1/2 [38mm]screws as the point will fill the gap and or cut in the brick a couple off mm

i know the extra 1/4"[6.35mm] seems pointless[punny] but with the first and last 3mm without a thread an inch and a quarter is about 26mm threaded with a inch and a half 32mm is nearing 25% more grip
same again if its 30mm/inch and a quarter
