Fair price for work or a rip off

I would, however say that it is clear just how BG can fit a £300 circuit board for £156

So GG can you clarify that for me.

answer - is it a rip off ? not if you have shares in BG

Sure its a rip off FFS

Sure.. The BG one off repair promotion... Take one Not ideal Combi circuit board...Price roughly £200 + VAT add fitting and my bill would be around £300.....BG will fix any single fault round here for £156.. Now allowing for the fact that even with BGs phenomenal buying power doing the job for £156 has got to be at a loss... So where does the money come from to keep all the shareholders happy? Not really any of our business how BG conducts its business but it does vex me that the big guys love to wipe us little guys out..Trading on a name that they no longer deserve to have

They used to quote for heating systems at cost including service contract knowing full well that most people simply couldn't compete on price or rep given that they were doing the job for nothing however they ensured that people who took their quote were hooked as in gas supplied and yearly service contract renewed.

I've seen some of their more recent quotes-£2000 odd to supply a Baxi 105-which are frankly unbelievable.

I did a job for a guy who had been quoted £3200 by BG.

My price was about £1450 and he still moaned.

Sometimes you just cannae win

Last July.

Cream carpets throughout though.

I ended up replacing all of the rads which were full of black magnatite (not bad for a Saturday morning BTW) sludge.

hmm, interesting, i shall enquire with the local sales dodger, as far as i knew we didnt sell baxi's as they are clearly c.rap

I aways said I could knock 20% of a BG price without looking at the job.

And as for an Ideal boiler  they are nearly as bad as a Potty/Baxi.

Come on lads, no independent would ever want a company as big as bg to be giving any where near a competitive quote. The more they charge the better the price I give looks

In fact I wish they were not allowed to have the predator pricing they have now with fix priced repiars on boilers. Like with supremers where the fix price was cheaper then independent could even buy the pcb

I also would like some how that they could be striped of the name.

eloquent as ever.

do your customers get a guide book to your quotes?

i think you get the idea of my post... the fact that they charge too much only helps independent installers.

It is not so much that they charge a lot, as the fact that a lot of the guys are not worth the high fee. A company that size have obviously a number of very good engineers with vast knowledge and ditto experience. I doubt however if you will see them on your doorstep for a lowly installation or first call breakdown.

I got a call from a girl who had been quoted 4 grand for 24I greenstar, and when the engineer showed up he told her that they could not connect the condensate to the waste because it was old brass pipe. Mumbled something that sounded suspiciously like an excuse and generously offered to knock a hundred quid off the price so she could use that to pay me for the connection.
That is just not on. If you are good enough to charge 4 grand for a boiler swap, you show up, look around, say:” easy peasy put the kettle on luv” and do the job neat and tidy.

BG have an immense buying power and for every Suprima new PCB required they have three LP switches for an Indeal response.

They dont HAVE to complete the repair! They can walk away from a leaking HE in a Response and just quote for a new boiler and they will still get at least one in three replacement jobs.

They do have to unless there is another fault in which case the cheapest one will be done under the fixed price.
It's not such a loss making offer as a 200 quid pcb costs bg maybe 40/ 50 quid and an hour labour cost of 25..thats a handsome markup.
It is slightly flawed in that it is being well used by local engs to get highflow tanks, unvented cylinders and heat exchangers replaced, that is why it bg try very hard to sell it with a one year contract.

All BG have to do is say that its a part no longer available at THEIR stores.

The Response HE is apparently no longer available from Ideal now.

A common misconception Tony but not accurate, they try the national distribution centre which is bg and the largest boiler parts warehouse in europe I believe, all the major nation suppliers and then the list of independent specialists.

I rang ideal a couple of years back and they said the response hx was down to around 80 held in stock with no more being manufactured.
