Can anyone help with a problem with my boiler (CH).

The pressure runs around 3bar but occassionally drops below 1bar, after filling upto 1bar the boiler ignites then runs upto 3bar then drops again to zero. This occurs for around 24 hours then settles down to run at 3bar.

Thats all totally wrong and is causing problems to your system.

The boiler is old and the expansion vessel is failed or needs pressurising.

Read about it in the FAQ on this site.

Well that would explain why the pressure shoots up so high!

Why do you think there is no expansion vessel?

One was never fitted when installed, however the problem seems to have arisen since I had an additional radiator installed.

It should not be very difficult to realise that ALL pressurised systems should have an expansion vessel to adsorb expansion.

Until your extra rad was fitted obviously air in the rads was adsorbing expansion.

The solution is to have an expansionvessel added. Usually about a 12 litre vessel will be adequate if you dont have more than about 10 aderage size rads.
