Hi,

We are having our kitchen remodelled, the kitchen is currently an small galley extending into a flat roof extension. THe previous owners have plasterboarded the original external wall where it joins with the party wall.

Our builders have been in and taken a piece of the plasterboard away to investigate how to remove a portion of original exterior wall, this has revealed the cavity that goes straight through to next doors house. SInce removing the plasterboard we have noticed an increase in sound coming from next door!

THey will eventually plasterboard over the cavity gap but I was wondering if it is possible to fill the cavity with something like no more gaps before plasterboarding to improve sound insulation? We could hear a little noise before the plasterboard was removed so would like to take the opportunity while the cavity is exposed.

All advise welcomed!

Regards

It's not just the sound insulation you should be concerned about. The party wall should be fire stopped where it joins the external wall (to prevent fire spreading between buildings). You need to close the cavity with a fire resistant material. Try Rockwool, this also has sound reduction properties.

Yes rockwool will serve both sound and fireproof requirements, also, an extra layer of plasterboard with no overlapping joints will do wonders, ask them to fit an extra layer when boarding it all back up.
