Hello all!

Just about to open up an existing fireplace to accommodate a new fire, there is no lintel, but a request to install one for support has been made. Once a tidy hole has been form I'll be applying a skim of plaster to neaten things up...

Questions:

Is there anything I need to be aware of?

What are the essential tools needed?

What king of mortar mix will I need?

cheers

yes if you get it wrong it might kill you.

is this an open fire e.g. coal or a stove ?
burn a sheet of newspaper in the opening to see if the chimney is blocked
you will need to get it swept before you have a fire.
and you would be off getting in a builder to fit it or find a detail book about fitting the type of fire your having from
your local library.
tools to make the hole = lump hammer, bolster, hammer drill + 10mm masonry bit.
