Fireplaces

Hi.
I need some advice regarding a fireplace installation. I have an existing electric fireplace with surround that is covering up my chimney. I would like to put in its place a gas fire. However i have been told that not all electric fire surrounds are suitable for gas fire. Could someone perhaps advise me how i can find out if mine is suitable and if its not how i can make it so that it is.

I think this is the question for plumber's as there are strict rules and regulation with gas fire on this issue which I'm not up to date on this.If you post this on the plumbing section you might get a quicker response.
