I am about to fit a new bathroom sink, and have a question concerning fitting the sink waste, should i use some silicon (or fs-x) to seal the waste to the bottom of the sink, or will the locking nut underneath the sink be sufficient, would hate it to leak from the plug after fitting everything

Carefully pump some top quality silicone sealant into the gap between the tail of the waste and the hole in the basin - avoid getting it into any overflow slot that might be there.

Then use a poly washer under that, then the backnut.
