I need to fit a new header tank water vessel to my gloworm 170 sxi as the original is rusted through and weeping. Is it as easy as it looks? One big nut connecting the pipe at the top? Do I need to fill with water before refitting? thanks for any help.

Yes, it's pretty much that easy - turn your water off, open a hot tap and wait for the flow to stop, remove old vessel, fit new vessel, turn water on and turn off hot tap.

Part number 0020038257

Ok thanks that inspires me to have a go. Only thing that puts me off is a few bits I read on the web regarding pressurising the bowl with air? Does this sound right or is that something else? I take it mine is literally a water vessel? Also thanks for the genuine part number these seem to come up at circa £170 however the zilmet part number one is available for under £40 and is exactly the same as a the one currently fitted?

I contacted the seller on ebay and he confirmed as you say they are pre charged. My final question relates to your original answer where you say "turn the water off at the mains and open the hot tap and wait for the flow to stop". Why is that? Isn't this a cold water container? Sorry if that sounds daft but I want to be 100 % confident before I tackle the job! Thanks

This looks like the Ultrapwer sxi storage combi and that expansion vessel is part of the unvented hot water storage system. It is in fact a safety device and an unvented qualification is required to work on them. You should have a pro do it for you.

It is indeed that boiler. My local specialist wants £225 to supply and fit....you can see why I'm considering doing it myself when the part is £33 and is held on with one nut. If it goes Pete tongue I've only myself to blame! Ta

Seems like your local specialist specializes in screwing as much money out of customers as possible. I'd try ringing around for another quote.

dangerous things unvented hot water tanks

£225 is ridiculous. Get another quote. Especially if you can supply the part. Maybe he was looking at list price for the boiler on that quote? In which case it wouldn't be so bad. The eBay part appears to be identical.

Yup, don't play with un-vented hot water systems, they are dangerous beasts. I appreciate they look straightforward but there is a reason that you need to be qualified to work on them. They can kill you if the safety components are not fitted and tested correctly.
