My lounge and dining room are connected by an archway and currently have the same flooring. I’m redecorating and looking to use hard flooring in the dining room (skirting on after) and carpet in the lounge (skirting on first).

If the two rooms were separated by a door then there would be no problem, but the arch allows the skirting to be continuous.

Any tips or ideas to prevent it looking like a bodge job?

if you are using the same skirting profile all round, I would mark out the position of the top of the skirting for the carpeted side , then cut down the skirting for the hard flooring.

anything else you do will look a bodge

If it's a classical house then you could alternatively use plinth blocks and decoration around the arch.
