Flanges of all different counties?

Just a matter of interest on this one.

I have seen all different types of flanges referred to. I have now seen Essex, Surrey and York flanges and I bet there are probably more as well.

What I am wondering is, why are they all named after counties? Is that the county they used to be made in, or were they named after the inventors? David Essex, Dick York, Surrey (and Cher ;) )

So, if anyone knows or has a theory then let's hear it!
