Was in a shop yesterday and noticed they had some old 8ft tubes lighting the place. On one of the tubes there was a metal strip running the length of the tube. The other tubes had diffusers on them. What is the metal strip for?

It's an earth strip that helps strike the tube in cold conditions, you'd usually find them in cold rooms, fridges, freezers etc.

5ft and 6ft versions were also frequently used on railway station platforms due to the cold conditions.

seemed to be quite common with the old starterless ballast fittings that had additional earth tags on the the lampholders we used 5ft versions in co-op cold rooms in the late 70's

Blast from the past....

MCFC (I think), superseded by MCFE.

I'm not talking Man City, either.... ;)

Not talking about the length, talking about the type...
