I have and S reg ford fiesta 1300(ish). Ofter I have been driving for about 20 minutes, the heater suddely blasts hot air into the car, even though it is switched off and on cold. I have not noticed that the engine itself is overheating, any ideas as to what I need to check please.

Please check the coolant level in the plastic expansion tank first (the liquid should be red in colour, but sometimes blue) - the levels Max and Min are marked on the outside. Keep it up to the Max mark.
The heater control valve is electric on Fiestas and they are prone to failure....but I've never had one fail in this way!
John :)

Must be a problem within the heater? If it's turned off, then turns itself on? Weird!

I would agree with burnerman. The valve will not be closed, even though it is switched off. It will be operated by a solinoid which has failed.
Most likely due to faulty coil.
Other than that, it could be a fault in the wiring going to and from the valve.
So check wiring first.
