I have a new problem with my 1.6 2001 manual ford focus. It has decided to be awarkward about me selecting third gear. Going down the gears appears better than going up. It also appears better the slower I drive.

The car has done only 25K. Does anyone have any suggestion as to what the problem is?

gear selection on all new fords is now done by cables instead of the normal rods, you will need a 3mm drill bit.
Put it in neutral, unclip the gearstick cover, insert the drill bit into a little hole, there should only be one hopefully, from under the car remove the black plastic cover directly below the gearstick, there should be 2 cables, unlock the selector cable by pressing the coloured insert, move the selector lever to its center position, engage 3rd or th gear (move the gearstick to its right hand or left hand stop postion), lock the selector cable. re fit everything and remove the drill bit and job should be a gooden hopefully!!

sounds like ur gear shift return spring has gone, very common fault on the focus, had to do mine bout 3 months ago. hope these help

Get following part from dealer Finis code F1142069 £2.82 (inc VAT £3.31)

1: Remove gearstick, just twist like a bottle top but with a little bit more force

2: remove surround, just push up from handbrake end and lift. There is NO need to remove cup holders etc..

3: you should have something like this now
