Hi there,

I have started removing wallpaper from a wall at the rear of my house and have found damp patches across the bottom, about 1 foot from the floor. Is there a DIY fix for the problem without having to get professionals in?

Thanks for any help!

We need to know what is causing the damp?
What room is it?
Is it an external wall?
Is it cold to touch?
Has it turned a colour?
Is it single leaf/skin wall or cavity?
Is the outside wall rendered or pointed?
Can you see a DPC about 150mm up the outside brickwork?
Does the damp start at floor level and go up a foot or just a damp patch a foot up?

Try keeping the room warm and well ventilated for a year without any large furniture against the wall. If the problem goes away, it is probably condensation.

Thanks for the replies guys.

The damp starts about a foot up from the floor. I can see a DPC and the wall is pointed. From what I know its a cavity wall!

The patch is cold to touch and isn't a different colour, just darker than the wall?

It's a back room that used to be a bedroom but I'm making it into a dining room.

I'm not sure what the cause could be!

Static, I'll be doing your fourth step continuously!

Is the cavity filled with insulation?
When did it start?
Do you dry clothes in the room?
Any furnature against the wall?
Do you keep the room ventilated?
