Using a core of 2.5 mm wire to clear any possible blockage produced no improvement.
I felt it was a faulty thermostat and set about testing and getting a new one.
Not willing to spend money un-necessarily I decided to 'clean' the contacts by switching on and off for about a minute or so.
Hey, presto, it has been working fine ever since.
