Fuel pumps

My old car has a mechanical petrol pump & when it has stood for a long time it takes a while to pump the fuel through, sometimes draining the battery before the car starts. Is it possible to replace it with an electric one which will pump the fuel up when the ignition is switched on or will a non return valve in the line from the tank to the pump solve the problem. Thanks

Mechanical fuel pumps have 'flap valves' inside them which ideally should stop fuel returning to the tank.
Therefore, replacing your pump with another mechanical one should do the trick.
However, the mechanical pump may be bypassed and an electric one installed if you wish.

Thanks for that, so does that mean I may have a fault with my current pump & should be able to strip & repair it.

If you can get a refurbishment kit for your existing pump then by all means give it a go.....you may find that a complete replacement won't be that much more expensive though.
