I need to a length of my galvanised water main with poly pipe to lower the level (at the moment its above ground) Is this straightforward? Can I just turn the water off, hacksaw through and fit a compresion joint of some sort to join the plastic pipe? I guess it must be an imperial size pipe, about 1 inch dia.

No you cannot.

You could cut the pipe and unscrew it at a join, or buy a Philmac universal coupler.

And don't forget the insert for the mdpe.

you could isolate 3/4" galv pipe, cut, and fit a PRIMOFIT 3/4" x 22mm adaptor
then work off the 22mm side in mdpe or whatever material yakes yer fancy

the PRIMOFIT slips over the 3/4" galv pipe and tightens on like a compression fitting

you could isolate 1" galv pipe, cut, and fit a PRIMOFIT 1" x 28mm adaptor
then work off the 28mm side in mdpe or whatever material yakes yer fancy

the PRIMOFIT slips over the 1" galv pipe and tightens on like a compression fitting

It won't be 1" Glasgowgas. 3/4" maybe
