We currently have a gap on both sides of our hearth between the hearth and the existing skirting board. The gaps are around 3-4 inches and I need to know the best way for this to be rectified. Do we need to get an additional piece of skirting and insert this? If so, how is this done and is it easy? Or should the whole length of skirting on either side be replaced? Please note that this problem is in a carpeted room and so a solution with minimum upheaval would be preferred.

Had a simlar prob myself, took a while but managed to source some matching board from a DIY shed.... just cut to fit, use a good sandable filler for the joint, and then undercoat and Gloss.

Take your time with the sanding side of things and you should be able to make it look pretty much one piece....

Hope thats helped.
