Hello,

I'm looking to install some downlights in an outside single storey studio. The building has a flat sloped OSB roof with felt on top, and is insulated with celotex between 4 x 2 joists, the internal ceiling is 5mm birch ply. The total gap between the ceiling (inside the room) and the roof is 100mm. I can get the following from screwfix: http://www.screwfix.com/p/adjustable-brushed-chrome-mains-voltage-fire-rated-downlight-240v/42935 which require a depth of 89mm but is there a minimum gap required between the top of the light and the roof or will 11mm be sufficient?

If not can anyone recommend downlights that can fit in a ceiling with 100mm between the ceiling and the roof and do they need to be fire rated?

Thanks in advance,

J

Most recessed light fittings require at least 100mm above the light itself, so no way you can safely fit them into a 100mm space.

Fire rated are not required as there is no room above, however they will need to be suitable for mounting into a flammable surface. Most are not suitable for that either.

If you actually find some fittings which can be installed there, they must be of the type which only accept LED lamps, to prevent someone from installing halogen lamps at a later date.

As you will obviously be removing the insulation where the light is, unless the light fitting is totally sealed and airtight, condensation will form behind it causing mould and the ceiling will rot away.

Flameport,

Thanks for your reply, how do you find out the specifications for the gap behind recessed lamps and is this information specifically given by the manufacturers?

You'll have to find the manufacturers specification. Most will supply this with the fitting, or have the info on their website, or the suppliers website.

Even halers downlighters at 84mm deep still require 50mm clearance, so I doubt you'll ever find a fitting suitible for a 100mm void.
