All cable have to be 'protected', In a garage there is a greater risk of damage so it probable safest to install cables in some high impact plastic conduit. Apart from the neatness this creates it is easier to change configuration in the future.
Depending upon how many cables you are installing you might consider singles.
Twin and earth cables have an outer sheath for mechanical protection, and in the case of singles, the conduit fulfills this function, in my opinion much better.
