Gas fire soot

Someone posted something similar previously and people thought it was a joke. Not a good sign then!

We have an fairly old gas fire in a fireplace. Over time, black sooty deposits have been appearing on the ceramic(?) area where the flame is. And there's lots of yellow in the flame. It's now got really black. We have an new electronic CO2 detector as well as the (supposedly?) too-late-to-be-useful disk things that are supposed to change colour. No sign of a warning yet though. But the fire's now off.

The chimney may be blocked because I heard birds up there during summer.

Q: Who's the best type of person to call to check the fire and check and clean the chimney? Will a gas fitter-type-person sort out the chimney as well?

yeap he/she will or should do ring round and ask if they do fires, try going up and checking first.

We fit/service gas fires but normally a chimney sweep is called for cleaning chimney.

If your fire is that sooty DO NOT use it until it has been checked be Rgi.

Gas fitter's coming Monday to service. They said they *should* be able to deal with chimney.
