Hi

We had a Glowworm Energy 18r Boiler installed, everything was fine until 3 weeks later when it developed a problem.

Every night the boiler is switched off about 9pm. Last Sunday the pump came on for 10-15 secs then went off. It did this at 3.27am. Monday was 2.27am so on until last night was 9.30pm. It only does this once per night.

The installer has checked and cant find a problem, have contacted Glowworm and waiting for a response just wondered has anyone had anything similar?

Thanks

The boiler may have a pump exercising function that operates the pump briefly every 24 hours if there have been no other demands on it during that period. This seems unlikely as you appear to be in occupation at half past 3 in the morning unless, like me, you haven't switched the heating on yet!

Read the installation manual. There is usually a section near the front that describes how the boiler operates, and its features.

Yes we have the heating on already. The times changes each day so it started doing it 3.30am Sunday then 2.30am Monday then 1.30am Tuesday, so today should be 8.30pm. A bit more respectable time but still an unwanted problem. Don't belive this boiler has this function anyway.

At night Get someone to run the Cold tap pretty hard for a few moments then quickly shut it off and see if the boiler activates briefly. Some time you have have a water bounce/hammer effect in the pipework that can cause the boiler to think that someone has momentarily run the hot tap. In some instances this is only noticable at night when its quite or when the water pressure in the mains is at its highest.

Also press the mode button on the boiler before bed until the radiator symbol is no longer shown, if it then continues to happen over night you can then rule out the external timer/room stat as you have turned the heating off at the boiler.

UPDATE: Vaillant engineer turned up, within a few minutes, he knew what was going on and advise we contact the installer to change the wiring, he even spoke with them. Installer came out and change the wiring and no more problem.

Vaillant engineer said all new boilers have this "feature" in that the turn on every 23 hours for a few seconds, even if there is no demand and the boiler is turned off. He said most people don't notice it and the ones that do are because the pump is in the airing cupboard in a bedroom.

Solution is the change it form a 5 wire to a 3 wire. Believe they just disconnect the permanent live wire and connect it to the switched live wire( Not completely sure)

Anyway it has fixed the issue. Hopefully someone else may find this useful :)
