Hi,

We moved in to a new house a few months ago and the Mrs didn't like the fire surround.

We have recently purchased a used granite fireplace of ebay that is in great condition.

The fireplace it's self is gas so we will have to get that disconnected and reconnected buy registered gas technician but I am hoping to fit the fire surround myself.

The fire surround comes in 5 pieces.
The Hearth
Two side pillars
The top pillar and the mantle.

There are no brackets on any of the pieces for mounting the unit apart from some wires hanging out of the top of the side pillars. I have a feeling these may have been wrapped round some screws which were fixed in too the mounting wall.
The back plate or surround sits proud of the wall as well by the looks of it so I would assume it would need packing out

First of all I'm after some advice on how such a heavy piece of kit can be safely secured to the wall, do I use the wires? And secondly what type of bonding material should I use to fix it to the wall?

Any help greatly appreciated

Thanks
Darren

I should imagine if you have the opening all set up and ready to fix the fireplace in place then l would probably use a good fast set tile adhesive .You would have to secure the two side pillars with the wire attached to a good fixing screwed into the wall. I would also put some wooden props wedged against the two side pillars to keep them in place until the adhesive sets.As for the top section it would be better to chase it into the wall then plaster down to it when it has set been set in.Make sure you get all your measurements correct and everything is plumb and level..lt may be wise to put masking tape on all the edges that are going to be plastered in.As the plaster might stain the granite. As granite is porous if it hasn't been sealed, you can see the marks on one of the pieces where it has been dabbed with adhesive before.Good luck with it and take your time doing it.. ;)
