My 2nd post, thanks for reading :)

I have a boile rin my house (Potterton, on the wall, tank in loft, it feeds 7 radiators and a hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard).

I haven't had the heating on (for obvious reasons) for a while now, but when I did, the radiators were not getting hot. The boiler was firing up but no joy.

Is there any common causes for this, so I can fix them (if DIY able) in time for winter again.

Thanks for your help

Check that the pump is running.
Check for no air in the system.
Check that the motorised valve(s) are working correctly.Quick test... call for heating and check that the pipework from and to the valve are warming up.

the boiler fires up so I presum the motor valves are working ok...

all rads have been vented and water escapes

the pump.... how do i check for that ?

Put a screwdriver (blade end) to pump body. Ear to other end, should be able to hear pump running. Also, loosen large screw in centre of pump head, should release any trapped air and water should dribble out.

Does the boiler heat the cylinder at present ok?

Hi

Thanks, the pump seems ok, it comes on for hot water, Hot water heats up as normal.

Do yu think it could be sludge? Or maybe the motor valve isn'topening fully or something is jammed inside it?
