Total novice and a newbie here. Having stripped wallpaper off the walls a while back I have now decided to emulsion the walls(not up to papering), however te paint which is already on the walls is flaking in places. What is the best way to prepare the walls and get the best surface possible? Thanks in advance Angelx

Hello Angel..

Painting over a stripped wall can give you a few problems..the main one being the new paint sticking to it...the paste will cause it to life and blow.

So the first thing you need to do is make sure you have scrubbed the walls squeaky clean....then rinse them

Then scrape off all the lose stuff and sand the walls down...then give them a thinned coat (15%) ...that will show you where you need to fill and give the filler a good base.

Then either touch the filler up with emulsion or repaint the walls twice

Trouble is with doing it that way is youll see loads of stuff that needs filling...youl also have different surfaces, which after they are painted will show up quite badly

I'd really really consider lining them first...youl still have to fill but you wont have to scrub them clean and youll end up with a much better finish.

Thanks for the reply. I have washed them down and they look loads better already, will move onto scrapping/sanding next. Angel
