Help needed - can I reduce the interior footprint of my roofline...see pictures

Hi. Well the top beam is a wall plate I think, because its in line with the back wall of the bedroom. The bottom beam just seems to be suspended from the top beam and I don't think its mounted in the brick work. And you can see that its definitely not supported on the far right hand side.

I'm going to pull down the plasterboard this weekend which should shed a bit more light. However, I really can't see much point in the framework and as woody says, its probably just a bit of crap boxing in...

I'll post pics once plasterboard is off...
