So explain to me how the op should remove a potential airlock on a heating drop with the bypass open?when you do start to vent the radiators ,you do not need to turn any valves off on any radiators ,and you most definitely should not try turning any of those old gate valves near the hot water cylinder ,as someone suggested.you stated Grandad had been fiddling with it ,not good. those valves are notoriously problematic ,they don't close properly ,sometimes snap internally and will not open. you will face a much higher plumbers bill if you come to grief with one of those gate valves. leave them alone .you do not need to touch them to bleed radiators.

BAP: Are you a plumber?
How is it poor? I'm saying you can shut off each radiator one by one with the valve. Then I say vent each radiator?
