Hello,

Wondering if someone can help me with this mystery.

I want to install a new permanent on garden wall light.

There is a pre-existing junction box which is wired coming from the wall to a switch box, which controls an existing wall light elsewhere. It has live, earth, neutral, and a switch wire.

I have mounted the new wall light and wired it into this junction box to share the live, earth and neutral via a connector block, but the lamp will not work.

I have double checked the connections and can detect power running through the new wire to the new lamp with a testing wand. I have also checked the bulb to ensure it works.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Attached is a diagram of the setup.

Measure the voltages present at the new light fitting.
Measure line to neutral.
Line to earth.
Neutral to earth.
And show us a pic of wiring at new light fitting.
Does your new light have a PIR sensor ?

Thanks for your reply. I will get some readings tomorrow (more difficult with a head torch!).

Attached is a photo of the junction box with the additional wiring.

ah sorry, missed the PIR part. No its just a constant on. I will use a smart bulb eventually once its finished.

Your description of live, neutral, switched live ,and earth ,together with your diagram ,will require 4 terminals . But your picture shows only 3 ??? Are the two yellows connected to each other in that joint with red insulation ?
Check the blue neutrals are all clamped on copper conductors in that terminal.

I didn't touch the switched wire. It remains connected via the red butt connector, and is not included in the connector block.

In the top "Before" diagram, the switched wire is yellow.

Will double check the connections.

Problem solved!

I took voltage readings as you suggested and only live to earth had a reading, which leads me to believe maybe only live and switched wires are functional in the junction/ switch set up. Luckily I had another garden light near the junction, so wired it into this successfully.

I previously only broke out the multimeter for smaller hobbyist DC testing (like solar panels for cameras), but will certainly make a habit of testing, even if just for a second safety check in conjunction with the wand.

Really appreciate the replies Terry!
