Hey guys, I'm new on here, I'm just starting to rennovate a house and hoping to learn some info here. Some background, the house in question is a detached bungalow converted into a chalet bungalow with a garage/ porch added. House was built in the 60s, the garage and porch extension was added in the 80/90s.
The house has been empty for about 5 years with no heat, windows locked on first catch. The previous ten years my father lived in it who heated the living room/kitchen/ bedroom and no other rooms! As a result of these factors the house smells a bit musty and has light black mould spores in a few places. I don't think the house has a problem just lack of heat and ventilation!
The garage/porch is a different matter! It is single skin brick with a flat roof! No heat, no vents and until recently filled with * rubbish, old decaying kitchen units screwed to the walls etc. It has black mould behind where cupboards were, paint/ plaster blistering with white mould. The roof had been borded with 1/4 ply (no insulation) and when removed the full roof is covered with white mould on the inside. My plan is if possible to make the rear of the garage into a utility room with kitchen units/ sink/ washer/dryer. Tile the floor, board the walls etc, board the rest of the garage and paint and hopefully finish to a decent standard.
Obviously before I start any of this I want to remedy the damp situation, my plan atm is to get some rads in ( renewing heating system) fit trickle vents into the windows and possible a couple of passive vents into walls.
Any other ideas/ input? I'm scared of doing a lot of work and it needed destroyed/ redone in a few years because of mould coming through walls etc
