can anyone recommend a good hoover for servicing work? want one light and generally not too bulky.

well i've got a George which is wicked but a bit bulkier than i'd really like to carry round just for servicing work
There was a lovely little mains powered one from Argos at about £30 which had a shoulder strap and 25 mm tube. Absolutely ideal for modern boilers.
Older and dirty floor mounted boilers are better with the Henry type.
Some are better at filtering out the fine dust. I was once accused of covering the flat with dust by a tenant. There was actually no dust but he just said he could see it. He was after not paying the rent as usual.
