I have a hotpoint washing machine. If I turn the dial to 60 or 90 deg it does nothing, no filling, clicking or purring absolutely nothing. However, if I turn the dial to 40 it behaves exemplary and works a treat.

Any advice on how to avoid buying a new machine would be greatly appreciated.

It is waiting for the correct water level to be reached. Is it a hot and cold fill machine with only the cold water inlet connected ? If so, thats your problem. Either connect hot to the hot inlet, or, probably more easily, put a 'Y' connector on your cold pipe and connect it to both hot a cold inlets.

Did it used to work ok?

Have a look at the hotpoint web site as well very good.

is it likely to be an electrical problem linked to the weel selector?

I've discovered that i can get it to fill on 40 then move to 60 and it's ok.
if i move it streight to 60 nothing happens at all.

I agree with Nigel, hot fill valve isn't opening. Check to see if it's open circuit or just replace it. Also check the wiring to it.

Remember to unplug any appliance before working on it.
