I am currently attempting to replace the hinges on old built in wardrobes and I want to see if there's a better way to remove these old hinge plates. They were pushed in and looked to be grooved as to not come back out. I got this one out but with a fair bit of damage to the MDF. Any tips or it is what it is?

Lever up either end in stages to avoid leverage which causes damage .

I would try gently loosening with pliers, alternating each end.

Could you perhaps cut the top part off with a very sharp chisel, leaving the round part in place, then drill the round part to accept your new hinges?

As per @Harry Bloomfield 's post.

The lugs will damage the surface of the the MDF if you try to pull them out.

Rather than a chisel, I might use a 9mm or 18mm blade snap off knife to cut through the embedded plastic lugs.If they are still slightly proud, you can tap them deeper.

If you absolutely want to remove then, do the above and drill the plugs out
