How to clean dust off painted walls

Hi,

I had a number of dusty items (much dustier than I thought) in my room and the dust spread on to the wall and made a real mess. However, there is another bit of dust marks on the other side of the room, so I'm not sure if it is all my items' fault. I was able to clean some of it off pretty easily but after I removed some of the items off my shelves, behind them the dust was really thick and regular kitchen towel wasn't working on that bit. I dampened it but the dust is now smeared on the wall. I looked online and I read that the best way to clean dust off a wall is with a swiffer or mop. I have one of those but it didn't do much if anything on the smeared bit. How should I clean the smeared bit and the dust off in general?
