Can anyone suggest how to fix the top newel post to the floor joists. I have had made up in pieces and am fitting them between two enclosing walls.

The newel post has a dowelled tenon joint with the stringer. Do I need to screw the newel post itself to the floor joist, or will screwing the stringer to the wall do the trick? Any suggestions welcomed. :?:

the stairs need securing to a wall via the string.

they also need securing to a trimmer at the top.

the newell is either m&t'd into the top of the string or jointed onto a joist, glued and screwed. it is not necessarily the job or the newell to restrain the stairs, but it needs to be soundly fixed in order to connect the bannister securely.

a free ended staircase will rely on the newell to hold up the side of the stairs. in this case the newell will extend all the way to the floor and be m&t'd into the string. the stairs will still need lateral fixings into a wall via the string.
