I've cleaned off some door frames. The doors used to swing the other way, so there are large slots cut out where the hinges used to be.

I'm going to paint the frames, but how to make good these big slots? The previous owner used polyfiller by the pound, but it's harder than the wood and is rigid, so it's cracking and falling out.

Is it practical to make small fillets of wood, let them in and sand them down? Other ideas?

Thats how i have done it in the past, cut a nice patch from some thin timber, glue it in, and plane flush. Sometimes a little wood filler is needed.

I have seen plenty that have been filled using polyfilla, and usually notices.

yes cut some small fillets of timber and then plane/smooth them down,if using any filler i would recommend a 2 pack, hard wearing and smooths really well.
