Rope lights would be the best option.

Even if you went to the expense and bother of a neon transformer and the correct wiring, insulation etc., you might find that the tube is busted anyway.

Do neon tubes go bad?

Our local Chinese has neon tubes on its frontage, theres 3 tubes, end to end, about 25ft in total, wired in series. I have noticed the tubes are brighter at one end than the other after several years. I know this is because they run on DC, so the gas or whatever must migrate to one end etc. But do the tubes ever reach the end of their life? Like fluorescents do?

a bit like 'when pets do very mildly amusing things' or 'minor sporting incidents go bad' or 'the worlds most mundane videos'
usually involving a half hour show, with three clips to show repeated over and over again whilst voiced over by an american telling poo jokes.

Could nip to Wilkos and get a cheap set of xmas tree lights, feed plug/lead out the back and have a nice bedside lamp for the other half.
(Perfect if she's called Kim or Karen or Keith )
