A builder tells me that there is practically no difference in the insulation qualities of Durox-type insulation blocks and ordinary building blocks. Is he right, or is he trying to get rid of some excess building blocks!?

No blocks are the same and have difference temperature rating.

I can't believe even the most ignorant builder could think that the two are anywhere near the same. Until recently it was still quite common to build from concrete blocks but add good insulation rather than use thermal blocks with no insulation. I wonder whether he meant there is little difference between these two options - which would be a lot closer.

As an example:

Good insulation blocks have a thermal conductivity of around 0.12 to 0.15 W/mK - concrete blocks typically have a thermal conductivity of anywhere between 0.5 and 1.2 W.mK

Thermal blocks are 300 - 500% more efficient.
