just a basic wc question-but with a lot of wc's now (especially close coupled) having integral overflows and no seperate overflow pipe running outside-how do these work? are they safe to use?? how does the water get from the cistern into the pan intime??! sorry for sounding ignorant!

if you remove the lid of the cistern you'll see a pop-up flush valve, the cylindrical plastic pipe that goes down to the bottom of the cistern is where the overflow ends up.

they're perfectly good but you need to keep an eye on them as with time in hard water area's they internally overflow and some people don't notice the water running down the back of the w-c pan.

how do the siphon type integral overflows work? is there a hole near the top of the siphon or something??!!

water is inside the syphon which will flow over the top when over filled just as it does when you flush the toilet.
