internal doors: which way should they open?

Maybe a silly question but...

I am replacing doors throughout my house. In both bedrooms the door is in the corner of the room at the left. In bedroom 1 the hinge is on the right. In bedroom 2 the hinge is on the left - I suspect this one has been changed because it blocks the light switch when opened.

Is there any convention or recommendation on "which way" internal doors should open i.e. which side the hinge goes?

They open so there is privacy in the room & to reduce drafts (is my understanding) but open it what is best for the room & you.

yep as diy says you open the door slightly you can see now't

apart from the light switch issue [moving sides]

if you decide to open into the hallway

you must not open out onto a stair but a landings is ok

also make shure the door won't trap other doors in case of fire
or make the movement of furniture into the room restrictive

apart from that do what you like :D ;)

Thanks for the answers, will try to work out what I think is best :) Light switch behind door is definitely not part of that

Amazing how many little things you (I) start wondering about when you start on this DIY stuff...
